Ismail Haniyeh: My message to the West – Israel must stop the slaughter

“I write this article to Western readers across the social and political spectrum as the Israeli war machine continues to massacre my people in Gaza. To date, almost 1,000 have been killed, nearly half of whom are women and children. Last week’s bombing of the UNRWA (UN Relief Works Agency) school in the Jabalya refugee camp was one of the most despicable crimes imaginable, as hundreds of civilians had abandoned their homes and sought refuge with the international agency only to be mercilessly shelled and bombed by Israel. Forty-six children and women were killed in that heinous attack while scores were injured.

Evidently, Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005 did not end its occupation nor, as a result, its international obligations as an occupying power. It continued to control and dominate our borders by land, sea and air. Indeed the UN has confirmed that between 2005 and 2008, the Israeli army killed nearly 1,250 Palestinians in Gaza, including 222 children. For most of that period the border crossings have remained effectively closed, with only limited quantities of food, industrial fuel, animal feed and a few other essential items, allowed in.

Despite its frantic efforts to conceal it, the root cause of Israel’s criminal war on Gaza is the elections of January 2006, which saw Hamas win by a substantial majority. What occurred next was that Israel alongside the United States and the European Union joined forces in an attempt to quash the democratic will of the Palestinian people. They set about reversing the decision first by obstructing the formation of a national unity government and then by making a living hell for the Palestinian people through economic strangulation. The abject failure of all these machinations finally led to this vicious war. Israel’s objective is to silence all voices that express the will of the Palestinian; thereafter it would impose its own terms for a final settlement depriving us of our land, our right to Jerusalem as the rightful capital of our future state and the Palestinian refugees’ right to return to their homes.

Ultimately, the comprehensive siege on Gaza, which manifestly violated the Fourth Geneva Convention, prohibited the most basic medical supplies to our hospitals. It disallowed the delivery of fuel and supply of electricity to our population. And on top of all of this inhumanity, it denied them food and the freedom of movement, even to seek treatment. This led to the avoidable death of hundreds of patients and the spiralling rise of malnutrition among our children.

Palestinians are appalled that the members of the European Union do not view this obscene siege as a form of aggression. Despite the overwhelming evidence, they shamelessly assert that Hamas brought this catastrophe upon the Palestinian people because it did not renew the truce. Yet we ask, did Israel honour the terms of the ceasefire mediated by Egypt in June? It did not. The agreement stipulated a lifting of the siege and an end to attacks in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Despite our full compliance, the Israelis persisted in murdering Palestinians in Gaza as well as the West Bank during what became known as the year of the Annapolis peace.

None of the atrocities committed against our schools, universities, mosques, ministries and civil infra-structure would deter us in the pursuit of our national rights. Undoubtedly, Israel could demolish every building in the Gaza Strip but it would never shatter our determination or steadfastness to live in dignity on our land. Surely, if the gathering of civilians in a building only to then bomb it or the use of phosphorous bombs and missiles are not war crimes, then what is? How many more international treaties and conventions must Zionist Israel breach before it is held accountable? There is not a capital in the world today where free and decent people are not outraged by this brutal oppression. Neither Palestine nor the world would be the same after these crimes.

There is only one way forward and no other. Our condition for a new ceasefire is clear and simple. Israel must end its criminal war and slaughter of our people, lift completely and unconditionally its illegal siege of the Gaza Strip, open all our border crossings and completely withdraw from Gaza. After this we would consider future options. Ultimately, the Palestinians are a people struggling for freedom from occupation and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital and the return of refugees to their villages from which they were expelled. Whatever the cost, the continuation of Israel’s massacres will neither break our will nor our aspiration for freedom and independence.”

A hipocrisia da esquerda em Portugal em relação a Obama… e razões para não apoiar Obama!

Nos últimos dias o esterismo das eleições nos EUA atingiu o ponto máximo, o climax! Não só nos EUA, principais interessados, mas também no resto do mundo, e portanto, em Portugal. Todos são a favor de Obama, claro! O candidado democrata, e não democrático como vários jornalistas fizeram questão de trocar, abalroou por completo o público português. De tal forma que até a esquerda se babou completamente pelo discurso mediático do senador. Vários bloggers de esquerda, anti-capitalistas, anti-conservadores, seculares, humanistas, comunistas, socialistas, verdes, entre outros, têm em Obama algo que Obama não é. Mas estão cegos pelas luzes da ribalta, do espetáculo, do “sonho americano”. Numa espécie de discurso bíblico e profético, acreditam escancaradamente que vem aí mudança, que Obama vai ser um novo fôlego na política externa americana, que vão acabar as guerras, que vão repôr democracia pela via do discurso, que se vão cumprir metas ambientais, etc. Em que mundo vivem? 

Obama pode ser melhor que McCain, sim e é-o, até porque McCain era um candidato muito fraco, mas isso não fez de Obama um bom político, um bom candidato nem um bom presidente, muito menos alguém a idolatrar! Não percebem que o Partido Democrata é apenas a ala mais à esquerda do Partido Republocrata? Obama é um Corporate Politician como dizem os Esquerdistas americanos, não percebem? Como podem criticar a política externa americana e ainda assim ser pelo candidado do Partido Republocrata? Não faz sentido. Como podem ser contra guerra e apoiar um homem que diz que vai aumentar o contigente de soldados no Afeganistão? Podem dizer que ele vai retirar do Iraque, mas isso já era de esperar dadas as negociações que estão a decorrer, e adivinhem só em quanto tempo se espera, 16 meses (tal como promete Obama). Ou seja, nada mais do que seria de esperar.

E quanto a outros pontos de conflito, como o conflito Israelo-Palestiniano, a resposta é muito simples e Obama já a deu no dia 4 de Agosto logo no dia a seguir à vitória nas primárias, quando se dirigiu, que nem um cachorrinho, à AIPAC (lobby israelita) e garantiu que Israel era uma prioridade, garantido que os laços entre ambos os países eram inquebráveis, e nunca pensaria duas vezes quando estivesse em causa a “segurança de Israel”. Os EUA continuarão a ser um “good friend of Israel” o que significa que Israel continuará impune e continuará a ter o apoio dos EUA, ou seja de Obama, para prosseguir com as atrocidades nos territórios ocupados da Palestina. Rídiculo. Para Obama, Israel é a “única democracia Médio Oriente”. I rest my case.

E quanto ao Irão, logo veremos. Obama diz que está disposto a negociar. Estará? Tal como o próprio referiu na AIPAC, “Iran, which always posed a dangerous threat than Iraq”, é uma séria ameaça à segurança de Israel! Isto põe as coisas bem claras para mim, Obama será um Bush no Irão; não hesitará, irá para a guerra. É, pelo menos, o que deixa transparecer nas entrelinhas do seu discurso patético na AIPAC: 

“those who threats Israel, threats us.” 
“I will ensure that Israel can defend itself, from Gaza to Teeran”
“$30 Billion to support Israel”
“we should export military equipament to our ally Israel”
“and I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself in the United Nations and around the World!”

Obama será, como já disse, não tão diferente de Bush quanto todos esperam. E esta última frase retrata bem este espírito belicista que muitos não vêm neste senhor. 

E quanto à mudança ao nível interno, receio que tudo não passe de fogo de vista, como aliás Obama já referiu no discurso de vitória, ao afirmar que seria muito díficil atingir as metas a que se propôs. Os mesmos que tanto criticam as políticas económicas, laborais, de saúde e de educação de José Sócrates, acreditam que Obama vai levar avante o que prometeu. Ainda que não pareça, José Sócrates está muito à “esquerda” de Obama, embora eu não goste de Sócrates nem tão pouco das suas políticas. Sejamos mais coerentes meus senhores e minhas senhoras. Obama não passa de um símbolo Pop, um patriota conservador que é contra o casamento homossexual meus caros. Como podem criticar o PS e defender o Obama? Cheira-me aqui a um restinho de hipocrisia…

Quero com isto, e para terminar, espressar as minhas condolências a todos aqueles que vêm em Obama algum tipo de mudança. Eu não a vejo. Todos os que hoje bajulam Obama, em breve estarão a escrever sobre o seu falhanço. Não tenham dúvidas disso! 

P.S.: Entre Obama e McCain, eu votava claramente Nader.

Chomsky: “Os EUA têm essencialmente um sistema de partido único”

Professor Chomsky, as catedrais do capitalismo entraram em colapso, o governo conservador está a gastar os seus últimos dias em exercício com os planos de nacionalização. Como é que isso o faz sentir?
Os tempos são demasiado difíceis e a crise demasiado severa para cair em lamentações. Olhando em perspectiva, o facto de que iria haver uma crise financeira era perfeitamente previsível, tal como a sua natureza e até a sua magnitude. Os mercados são sempre ineficientes.

O que é que previu exactamente?
Na indústria financeira, como noutras indústrias, existem riscos que não são calculados. Se você me vender um carro, talvez possamos fazer um bom negócio. Mas existem efeitos decorrentes desta transacção que atingem outros e que nós não temos em conta. Haverá mais poluição, o preço do combustível sobe e haverá maior trânsito. Estes são os custos externos do negócio. No caso das instituições financeiras, são gigantescos.

However, as one opposition leader said on Monday, the bombing has to stop, “Otherwise, the Russians are making Saakashvili the victim.”
